From Palestrina’s roman sanctuary to Zagarolo’s vineyards: a journey through time and taste
Palestrina, a charming town located just 21 miles east of Rome, is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. Here, you can marvel at the remains of the ancient Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia, one of the most significant religious sites of early Roman times. The temple located on a strategical point, offers a breathtaking views over the Roman countryside, the Alban Hills, and even the Mediterranean Sea.
Built around 120 BC, the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia was one of Lazio’s most important spiritual centers for centuries. Inspired by the architecture of Hellenistic monarchies in the eastern Mediterranean, it became a model for future generations, especially during the Renaissance. Today, the sanctuary houses the Archaeological Museum, which displays fascinating Roman relics, including ancient tablets, statues, and stunning frescoes.
Among the museum’s highlights is the exquisite mosaic of The Nile River, a masterpiece depicting detailed hunting scenes and various Nile animals, showcasing the ancient artistry of the region.
Just outside Palestrina, a short drive away, lies the town of Zagarolo, renowned for producing some of the best wines in the region. Here, we will visit a local vineyard, where the owners’ ancestors carved remarkable wine cellars into the tufa rock. The natural temperature of 50°F allows for the production of exquisite sparkling wines using the traditional Metodo Classico. After the tour through the property, we will enjoy a delicious lunch paired with the wines produced by the family, completing a truly immersive local experience.
